When you get Universal Credit (UC), your housing costs element is paid to you as part of your monthly total. You then pay your rent to your landlord yourself.
For most people this works fine. But if managing a large payment feels hard — or you worry about spending the money before rent is due — there is an option that can make things simpler.
Ask DWP to pay your rent directly
You can ask the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to send your rent straight to your landlord each month. This is called a Managed Payment to Landlord, or an Alternative Payment Arrangement (APA).
DWP separates the housing element from the rest of your UC payment and sends it to your landlord on your behalf. You still receive the remainder of your monthly payment as usual.
You do not need to be in rent arrears to ask for this. DWP can set it up if managing money is difficult for you.
How to ask for it
You can request a managed payment in a few ways:
- Send a message through your UC journal
- Tell your work coach at your next appointment
- Ask about it when you first make a UC claim
Your work coach will talk it through with you. If they agree it would help, they will set it up on your account.
If you are already behind on rent, DWP can also arrange for arrears deductions to go directly to your landlord at the same time.

Your landlord can also apply for a managed payment themselves. They do this using the Apply for a Direct Rent Payment service on GOV.UK.
If your landlord makes this request, DWP will contact you before reaching a decision. You have the right to tell DWP your view — for example, if you disagree with the request or have information that should be considered.
DWP must take what you say into account before deciding. You are not without a say in this process.
