How to get an advance on your Universal Credit to cover rent during the 5-week wait

Universal Credit rent help new claims

Key points

  • You can ask for up to 100% of your expected first UC payment as an interest-free advance — on the very same day you claim.
  • DWP usually gives you a decision the same day and pays the money within 3 working days, or sooner if your situation is urgent.
  • You repay the advance through small automatic deductions from your future UC payments, spread over up to 24 months.

You do not have to wait 5 weeks without money

When you make a new claim for Universal Credit (UC), you must wait about 5 weeks before you get your first payment. UC is paid monthly in arrears — the first payment covers your first assessment period but only lands after that period has passed.

For renters, that gap can be a real problem. You still need to pay rent on time, and your landlord cannot wait.

The good news is that DWP can give you an advance on your first UC payment. You can ask for it on the same day you claim, and in most cases you will have the money within a few days.

What is a first payment advance?

A first payment advance is an interest-free loan of up to 100% of your estimated first Universal Credit payment. DWP pays it straight into your bank account.

You can use the money to pay your rent, cover your bills, or buy food. There is no restriction on what you spend it on.

How to apply

You can ask for an advance through your Universal Credit online journal. Send your work coach a message saying you need money while you wait for your first payment. You can also ask at your first UC interview.

DWP usually gives you a decision the same day you ask. If your advance is approved, the money normally arrives within 3 working days. In an urgent case — for example if your rent is due immediately — DWP can sometimes pay it the same day.

You must ask before your first UC payment date, which is one calendar month after the date you claimed. After that date, the advance is no longer available.

Paying it back

The advance is an interest-free loan and you must pay it back. DWP deducts a small amount automatically from each of your future UC payments. You have up to 24 months to repay the full amount, so the monthly deductions are spread out to keep them manageable.

Before you accept, ask your work coach exactly how much will be deducted each month. Knowing this helps you plan your rent budget going forward.

If the advance is not enough

If your rent is higher than your UC housing element, the advance alone may not cover the full gap.

You can ask your council for a Crisis and Resilience Fund Housing Payment — a separate grant that does not need to be repaid. Citizens Advice can help you check if you qualify for this or any other local support.
