How to plan your money when your benefit payment arrives early for the August bank holiday

The late summer bank holiday in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland falls on Monday 31 August 2026.
DWP does not process payments on bank holidays or weekends. So if your payment date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or bank holiday, you will get your money on the last working day before instead.
This means if your benefit is due on Saturday 29 August, Sunday 30 August, or Monday 31 August, it will arrive on Friday 28 August.
Benefits this can apply to include Universal Credit, Carer's Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Child Benefit, State Pension, and Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
What this means for your budget
An early payment is helpful — but it also means your money has to stretch further.
Say your payment normally arrives on the last day of each month. This month it lands on the 28th. Your next payment still arrives on its usual date in September — so your money needs to cover a few extra days.
That might only be 2 or 3 days, but if your budget is tight, it matters.
How to plan ahead
When your payment arrives on 28 August, do not spend it all over the bank holiday weekend. Before you spend anything, set aside enough for:
- rent or mortgage (if it comes out early September)
- direct debits and standing orders due in early September
- food for the extra days before your next payment
If you use a prepaid card or budget account, move the money you need for September bills into a separate account or pot as soon as it arrives.

Not everyone will see a change. If your regular payment date is any other day in August — for example the 5th, 10th, or 20th — your money will arrive on its normal date and nothing changes.
If you run short before your next payment
If you are struggling to make your money last, there are a few options.
Universal Credit claimants can apply for a budgeting advance through their UC journal. This is an interest-free loan of up to £812 (if you have children) that you pay back from future UC payments over up to 2 years.
If your payment has been reduced or stopped, you may be able to ask for a hardship payment.
